How to Use

Type or paste your text and generate. QR codes work best with shorter text. For very long text, consider linking to a web page instead.

When text beats a link

A text QR code stores its content inside the pattern, so it works with no server, no redirect and no internet connection on the scanning side. That makes it the right choice for anything that must keep working when a website might not.

Keep it under about 1,000 characters. Beyond that the modules become too dense to scan reliably from a phone, especially on anything smaller than an A5 sheet.

  • Serial numbers, asset tags and equipment codes.
  • Short instructions that must work in a basement or on a site with no signal.
  • Message-of-the-day on a shop door or a vehicle livery.

What not to encode as text

Long paragraphs, tables and anything people would need to copy out are better off behind a short link — nobody retypes 800 characters from a phone screen. For documents and forms, use a URL QR code instead.

How much text actually fits

A QR code holds far more than most people need, but readability falls as the payload grows: every extra character adds modules, and modules have to stay big enough for a phone camera at arm's length. As a rule of thumb, keep a text code under about 300 characters for print, and well under 100 for anything smaller than a business card.

Digits and plain uppercase text pack tighter than mixed-case prose, so a serial number survives a smaller print than a sentence does. If you need more than a short paragraph, put the content on a page and encode the link instead - the URL QR code generator does that in the same three steps.

  • Test at the final print size before ordering a run - zoom the phone back, not the image forward.
  • Leave the quiet zone (the white margin) intact; a code trimmed to the edge is the most common scan failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much text can a QR code hold?

A standard QR code can hold up to about 2,000 characters of text. The more text, the denser and larger the QR code needs to be for reliable scanning.

Can I use emoji or special characters?

QR codes support most text characters. However, for best compatibility across devices, stick to standard letters, numbers, and common punctuation.

Is the text encrypted in the QR code?

No. Anyone who scans the QR code can read the text. Do not encode sensitive information like passwords or personal data in a text QR code.

How much text can a QR code hold?

Around 1,000 characters in practice. The limit is really about scanning: beyond a few hundred characters the pattern becomes dense enough that the code has to be printed large to read reliably.

Does a text QR code work without an internet connection?

Yes. The text is stored inside the pattern, so no network is involved in reading it. That is exactly why text codes suit basements, building sites and anywhere the signal is unreliable.

Is there a sign-up or a watermark on text QR codes?

Neither. The generator works without an account, the PNG and SVG downloads are clean, and the message lives inside the code rather than on our servers.

Do text QR codes expire?

Static text codes do not expire and keep working offline - the message is encoded in the pattern, so there is nothing to renew, cancel or keep paying for.
